Success! Reviews
of the CD Show Music USA,
January 1994
Bernard J. Taylor's Success!, like his earlier Wuthering Heights
(reviewed in V8N2), has yet
to be produced, but, in common with the previous score, has been recorded.
Its story is yet another variation on the Faust legend,
this time set in the theatrical world and centering on a songwriter who
wants to make it big.
Taylor's score has several attractive songs. Many have
a decided pop feeling, including "Reaching the Top," "Your
Music Has Touched My Heart," "I Think It's Time to Fall in Love,"
"Who Can Tell?," "I'll Still Be There," "Don't
Trust a Man" and "Some Folk Say."
Though some songs are marked by predictable rhyming, the
songs are all sung by Maurice Clarke, Claire Moore (Miss Saigon), Kathryn
Evans, Jessica Martin and Lon Satton (Starlight Express) as if they were
the hottest songs to come from the West End. Taylor should be so lucky
as to have this cast on stage if his musical ever happens.
