Nosferatu the Vampire
A rock operaReviews
The Stage,
by Barbara
Champion
This European
premiere at the Royal Hippodrome is Bernard J Taylor's rock musical, for which he has written powerful, richly textured music. The
entire narrative is sung and three melodies are instantly memorable.
If the score is a
vitally strong hook, there is more skill as the cast gathers warmth.
Peter Straker, as
Nosferatu, is visually disturbing. With impeccable diction he puts the case
for your average, well-dressed vampire during a lifetime of exhausting night
work, and makes you feel sorry for him. Christopher Biggins is interesting as
the insect-eating Renfield, but could also bring needed laughter for balance
and contrast.
Sheri Copeland
sings lovely duets with Stephen Barlow. Anthony Styles is well-cast, and
Sarah-Jane Bees is a victim with a lovely voice.
Director Jonathan Clift should close the gaps and
speed the pace. The set is worrying, stark and grey.
