Composer Bernard J.Taylor has written Wuthering Heights: The Musical
and it has been recorded by top singing stars.
By releasing the musical on CD and tape, the team behind the project are
adopting a tactic which proved a winner for Andrew Lloyd Webber. His musicals Jesus
Christ, Superstar and Evita were records before they were produced
on stage and helped build up a bandwagon of success.
Cast as Heathcliff on the album and possibly in the stage version is Dave
Willets, who found fame in Les Miserables. And singing the part of
Cathy is opera star Lesley Garrett, a soprano from Doncaster who has scored
triumphs with English National Opera but is dedicated to breaking down
barriers.
Lesleys new recording "Diva: A Soprano at the Movies," is high
up in the classical record charts and in addition to her singing she is also
well known for her glamorous appearance, which means that she is ideal
visually as well as vocally for the part of the beautiful moors maiden Cathy.
Cathy, says Lesley Garrett, is a woman "tormented by her love of
Heathcliff and the need she feels to spread her wings. She reflects the
reality of other times, especially for women, as it was for the Brontės
themselves. When they began to write they had to use a pseudonym and pretend
to be a man."
Composer Bernard J Taylor saw Lesley singing at the 1990's Last Night of
the Proms and decided then and there that she would be his ideal Cathy.
"The way he has written the role I think Cathy has more compassion
than Merle Oberon gave her in the famous Olivier film and I think that this
compassion can be found in the book."
